Reliance JioPhone: 8 terms and conditions you must know


Reliance Jio has finally revealed the terms and conditions for its low-cost 4G handset Jio Phone. Ever since the 'effectively zero-priced' phone was unveiled in late July by the company's chairman Mukesh Ambani, there has been speculation about the fine print of clauses that the customers will have to adhere to. For the first time, the company has detailed the same on its website.

JioPhone users need to make recharges worth Rs 1,500 every year
As per the terms and conditions given on Reliance Jio's website JioPhone users need to go for a minimum recharge of Rs 1,500 annually.
"The JioPhone is available for continued use on the Recipient purchasing telecom recharge vouchers of an Authorized Carrier (presently Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited) from the Company or any of its authorized retailers for use in the JioPhone of a minimum value of Rs 1,500/- per annum for a period of 3 years from the date of the first issue of the JioPhone," states the company on its website.
JioPhone is SIM locked
JioPhone is SIM locked. This means that users cannot use any other telecom company's network in the phone other than that of Jio.
"The recipient is aware that JioPhone is being offered with a SIM-locked feature. The company may, solely at its discretion, allow the use of the JioPhone with any other compatible network from time to time," says the website.
JioPhone users cannot sell or transfer the device
According to the company's website, "The Recipient has no right to sell, lease, assign, and transfer or otherwise dispose-off the JioPhone in any manner whatsoever."
Returning JioPhone after 12 months: Rs 1,500 plus applicable GST or other taxes need to be paid
JioPhone users who return the phone after 12 months will have to pay Rs 1,500 plus GST and other applicable taxes.
Returning after 12 months and up to 24 months from the date of first issue of JioPhone: Rs 1,000 plus applicable GST or other taxes need to be paid
JioPhone users who want to return their device after 12 months and up to 24 months from the date of first issue of JioPhone will have to pay Rs 1,000 plus GST and other taxes.
Returning after 24 months and up to 36 months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone: Rs 500 plus applicable GST or other taxes need to be paid
Those who want to return their JioPhone after 24 months and up to 36 months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone will need to pay Rs 500 plus GST and other applicable taxes.
The company reserves the right to take back your JioPhone
The company also has the right to ask a customer to return the handset if he/she fails to meet (or disrupts) the terms and conditions.
To claim refund, users need to return the device "before the expiry of thirty nine months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone"
"The JioPhone shall be returned by the Recipient to the Company on or after the expiry of thirty six months but before the expiry of thirty nine months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone. The Company will accept the return and repay the Refundable Deposit..." states the company on its website.
